(Fight Training Tip) Speed versus Quickness, Strength versus Power.By Brand of Lancaster a count of the Kingdom of Atenveldt February 12, 2009
It becomes important for practicioners of martial arts to understand, be it unarmed combat or armed, the difference between Speed and Quickness and the difference between Strength and Power.
In the beginning many people consider these elements to mean the same thing, that quickness and speed are the same and that power and strength are the same. In the combative arts you will find that Quickness and Power are prized more than just Speed and Strength. So let's define these elements for the martial purpose.
Speed is the act or state of moving swiftly
Quickness is reacting to stimuli with speed and keen sensitivity
Strength the quality or state of being strong : capacity for exertion or endurance
Power is to move with great speed and force.
--------
In Combat, Quickness incorporates not only speed, but how fast you can interpret and react, from start to finish. In throwing of shots Quickness is often referred to as Explosive Quickness, because for the greatest results the practicioner explodes into the action, like a gunshot, and the maneuver is over as swiftly as it begun. Speed can be achieved by a variety of methods, but by using Quickness a combatant will react faster, achieve faster speed, and return to guard faster. Change your thinking to wanting to be quick, not fast.
In Combat, Power incorporates strength, technique and quickness. Using just strength to push through a shot does not necessarily yield the most Powerful shot and can actually yield a relatively slow shot. Strength thrown through Technique and thrown Quickly will yield Power. Power will yield a greater explosive impact into yout opponent than strength, speed or even quickness alone. You should change your thinking to want to throw with power, not strength.
In many cases the faster and stronger opponent is not necessarily the quicker and more powerful opponent. By using the proper mentality, training and techniques even the not so strong and fast can actually be the quicker and more powerful hitter.
